United Nations has released the ranking of the world’s happiest countries (world happiness index) few days ahead of the International Day of Happiness (March 20), and it looks like Indians are getting more and more depressed with each passing year.
According to the world happiness report, Finland is the happiest place on the planet with a score of 7.632 on the 0-10 scale. In the list of 156 countries, India is ranked 133rd. We have slipped down by eleven places and now rank far behind many of our SAARC neighbors.
The ranking is given after taking into account the country’s per capita income, social support, healthy life expectancy, social freedom, generosity and absence of corruption. According to the report, India ranked low on generosity and freedom to make life choices.
On a related note, Pakistan ranks at 75 in the world happiness index, despite being ravaged by war. Incidentally, Finland was ranked number one and has jumped up five spots from last year.
The US, on the other hand, has also dropped four places from last year and reports suggest that this could be because of obesity, substance abuse, and depression.
The report is a consensus of several polls and it is quite astounding to know that India has ranked below several developed countries.
