Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan who turned 63 on Tuesday said he would not celebrate his birthday. Why, you ask? The actor refused to celebrate as Tamil Nadu is facing considerable damage due to the ongoing monsoon rains.

The actor on Monday tweeted, “Tomorrow is just another day if you just celebrate and fail to seize it. If we can make it better in pursuit of a cause then we become the change we seek.(sic)”

On the occasion of his birthday, he addressed his fans and launched an app, called Maiam whistle, at a medical camp in T. Nagar.

Highlights of the event

  • He launched a ‘digital platform’ for the public called Maiam whistle which he said could act as a ‘whistle-blower’.
  • The aim of Maiam whistle, he said, was to reach out to the people and it would serve as precursor to his political entry.
  • He did not announce the name of the party that many believed that he would launch. “The name of the party will not be announced right now. There’s no hurry,” the actor said.
  • “I have friends and families from all communities and don’t like being branded an atheist. I am a rationalist,” Mr. Haasan added. “I cannot accept violence in any form.”
  • On the recent flood-like situation in Chennai, the actor said, “There was no need to wait for [a] disaster to strike. Let us start today, if needed.”
  • When asked about his entry into politics, the actor said, “[I’ll be] shortly planning for a tour around Tamil Nadu to understand [the] people’s problems.” He added, “I am ready to fight against corruption.”
