Satish Sivalingam on Saturday won India’s third gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2018 in Gold Coast. It is his second consecutive gold at the CWG, with the first one coming at Glasgow in 2014.
With this, India’s medal tally rose to 5. What has made the effort truly remarkable is Satish’s perseverance to be at it despite India having less support staff to help the lifters recover in between their lifts.
Satish Sivalingam wins gold despite injury
Adding to the problems was Satish’s injury. After winning the event, he was quoted as saying by The Quint, “I had no hopes of winning a medal after I injured my thighs during the National Championships while attempting 194kg in clean and jerk. It’s a quadriceps problem, even now I am competing at less than ideal fitness but I am glad that was enough to get me a gold.”
President Ramnath Kovind was among those who wished Satish. “Weightlifters continue to make us proud on Day3 at #GC2018. Congratulations to Sathish Kumar Sivalingam for bagging the Gold in Men’s 77Kg.(sic)”
Former cricketer was also quick to wish the Vellore lad on his achievement. The ‘Sultan of Multan’ tweeted, “And another early morning gift for us, a golden start to the day. Congratulations #SathishSivalingam on our third #GC2018Weightlifting Gold in Men’s 77kg, lifting 317kg. Great effort despite the hamstring injury. His second successive gold after the one in Glasgow. #CWG2018. (sic)”
