Tamil Nadu bans plastic from January 1, 2019

On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Tamil Nadu government has announced that there would be a ban on plastics, except as containers for milk, medicines and oil.

The United Nations celebrates every World Environment Day with a theme, which for this year is ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’.

It is estimated that by 2050, there will be 12 billion tonnes of plastic in natural environments, polluting our soil, land and water ecosystems.

Earlier in the day, President Ramnath Kovind said, “On World Environment Day, we reaffirm our commitment to a cleaner and sustainable planet. India is hosting the global celebrations this year. And we are obligated to bequeathing a greener and eco-friendly legacy to our children (sic).”

Railways Minister Piyush Goyal also made an announcement that fully biodegradable containers for food will be used in four Shatabadi and Rajadhani trains from Delhi.
