Actor Vijay visited Thoothukudi late Tuesday night and met with the families of those killed in police firing during the protest against expansion of copper smelting plant of Sterlite.
According the multiple reports, the actor handed over a solatium of Rs. 1 lakh to the families.
Thirteen protesters were killed in police firing, following which the Tamil Nadu government issued an order to seal and permanently close the copper smelting plant. The residents have been demanding the closure of the unit, citing pollution of natural resources and it being a health hazard. The Home Ministry had directed the Tamil Nadu government to file a report regarding the violence.
Earlier, actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth visited the families to express their sorrow over the incident.
