Over the last year, many reports of mob lynchings and violence have been reported over rumour messages forwarded on popular instant messaging platform WhatsApp, which has over 200 million subscribers in India.
Reinstating that it is a “private messaging app”, the company has said that they are “launching a test to limit forwarding that will apply to everyone using WhatsApp.”
How will it impact you?
Once the changes are implemented, you can forward messages to only 5 chats at once. Also, the quick forward button next the media messages are set to be removed. The company has noted that Indian “forward more messages, photos, and videos than any other country in the world.”
The move, in essence, is aimed at curbing the spread of fake news and rumours that are rampant on the platform.
