Now, Mersal is highest-grossing non-Rajinikanth film overseas!

Vijay-starrer Mersal continues to break box office records, both in domestic and international markets. Close on the heels of the troubles mounting on the actor over some of the dialogues in the movie, Mersal has shattered another record in the international market.

Now, sources say, that the movie has become the highest-grossing non-Rajinikanth film in the overseas market. Recently, the movie also made it into the top 10 highest-grossing movies in south India. Sources say it has surpassed making Rs. 150 crore.

Gets entangled in political controversy

The movie witnessed hurdles in the form of political intervention against some of the dialogues which were seen as taking on recently introduced Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the much-talked about demonetisation of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 notes.

But the vitriol against the actor has spawned a series of trending hashtags. One of them, #IamJoseph (a reference and in solidarity with actor Vijay, has been trending on social media platform Twitter for the better part of two days.

Mersal, released on Diwali, is directed by Atlee and also stars Kajal, Samantha. Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman is the music director of the film.
