Now, motorists can pay fine using debit or credit cards

In a bid to reduce incidents of bribery, the Chennai City Traffic Police will not accept cash fine for traffic violations, starting Thursday.

Offenders can pay fines using digital modes of payment, including debit/credit cards, online methods of transaction. According to a news report, 300 swiping and e-challan machines will be used by the police to collect fines. “If they want to pay by cash, they will have to go to court,” the report quoted an official as saying.

However, cashless fine will not be applicable for drunk driving.

‘Challan will be sent home’

In the future, violators will not be stopped on the road, a senior police officer was quoted as saying. The CCTV cameras will capture the registration numbers of vehicles violating rules and challans will be sent to violators’ homes.
