TNPCB’s rejection of Sterlite’s plea, a step in right direction: Kamal

Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan on Tuesday congratulated the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) for rejecting Sterlite’s plea to renew the Consent to Operate for its existing smelter plant at Tuticorin. The company has claimed that the plea was rejected for “want of more clarifications. ”

In its letter to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE), Vedanta, Sterlite’s parent company, has said, “…please take note that the Company had applied for renewal of consent to operate (CTO) for its existing Smelter plant at Thoothukudi. The application has been rejected for want of more clarifications. The Company is evaluating further course of action.”

Reacting to the development, Mr. Haasan said, “Congrats, Tamilnadu pollution control board. The non renewal of Consent to Operate for existing plant of Sterlite is a step in the right direction but we have miles to go. The people of Tamizh Nadu have joined you in maintaining vigil(sic).”
